Polycrystalline diamond is best suited for lapping and polishing extremely hard materials where higher material removal rates and superior surface quality are achieved. Polycrystalline diamond particles are ultra rough with three times the surface area of monocrystalline particles.
Polycrystalline is typically used on materials that are difficult to polish, such as ceramics, steel for tools, sapphire and superalloys. It has more facets or cutting edges and maintains its cutting ability because it is less friable (easily crumbled or pulverized) than the more common and less expensive monocrystalline diamonds. Monocrystalline diamonds tend to have longer, sharper edges and are more suitable for less hard materials such as brass or mild steel. It can be used with sanding disks and polishing cloths.
